...So here's an idea I got from Dave Pearson over at really big monkey that basically involves using a crooked stick in the same way as a brace & bit.

...Dave's version was a lot bigger than this & he used a long forked stick as a crutch brace & he didn't use a handle just turned the stick by hand with a thick glove.
I also saw a version of this over on Phyre dojo's YouTube channel where he calls it a gauchos fire drill but he has it set up in a jig & it's not quite as primitive.

...I adapted a bamboo collar as a handle & made a smaller crutch bearing block on my design. The main shaft was a piece of tamarind branch & I made a short host spindle from a piece of Malayan cherry. I bound the end of the main shaft where it couples to prevent it splitting under the downwards pressure too & as you see it worked a treat.
