Most SEOs treat Google like a vending machine. Publish content, wait for rankings. But between publishing and ranking, there are three separate battles—and most people are fighting the wrong one.
In this episode, I break down why crawl, index, and rank are not stages of one process, but three independent systems that can each fail on their own.
I share a case study: an e-commerce site with 12,000 product pages where only 3,400 were indexed. Seventy percent of their pages were invisible to Google. A year of "SEO work" on pages Google had never even stored. After fixing the crawl waste problem, indexed pages tripled and traffic increased 140%—not from ranking improvements, but from simply getting pages into the index.
The diagnostic framework:
→ First: Is it being crawled?
→ Second: Is it being indexed?
→ Third: Is it ranking?
This sequence saves months of wasted effort. You can't out-optimize your way out of a crawl problem. You can't build links to fix an indexing problem.
Action step: Go to Search Console → Pages report → Find "Crawled - currently not indexed." These are pages Google found, looked at, and rejected. The answer tells you which battle you're actually fighting.
Episode 7 of 99. Module 2: Technical SEO.
