There's no other way to say it: Jeppson's Malort is terrible! But that doesn't mean you can't use it in some delicious cocktails. In this video I try Malort for the first time, talk a little bit about its history, and demo 3 Malort cocktails. 2 of them are from bartenders in Chicago, 1 is a riff of my own based on another famous Chicago cocktail. The Hard Sell by Brad Bolt
3/4 oz Jeppson's Malort
3/4 oz Beefeater Gin
3/4 oz St. Germain elderflower liqueur
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
- Combine all ingredients in a shaker, add ice, and shake hard
- Strain into cocktail glass
- Twist grapefruit peel over glass to express oils

Malort Highball by Paul McGee
1 1/2 oz Tequila
3/4 oz lime juice
3/4 oz orange juice
1/2 oz Jeppson's Malort
2 oz ginger beer
- Shake all ingredients except ginger beer and strain over fresh ice in a Collins glass
- Top with ginger beer
- Garnish with crystallized ginger.

Malort Axe: My riff on Danny Shapiro's Weathered Axe.
1/2 oz ginger syrup
1/2 oz orange liqueur
1/2 oz Jeppson's Malort
3/4 oz lemon juice
1 1/2 oz overproof bourbon
- Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker
- Serve in a lowball glass, with fresh ice if you want
- Garnish with a fresh sprig of mint if you so desire
