Miniseries Monday: This 1997 TNT two-parter about the Battle of San Juan Hill was co-written and directed by John Milius, known for movies like 'Apocalypse Now' and 'Conan the Barbarian'. But 'Rough Riders' harkens back to another Milius film: 'The Wind and the Lion', which also featured Teddy Roosevelt. Like that movie, 'Rough Riders' depicts real-life events with a dose or two of dramatic license; Milius considers it one of his best films (it was his last directorial credit). Brian Keith appears in both productions, playing Teddy in the earlier movie, and President McKinley in this four-hour miniseries. The end credits include an 'in memoriam' for Keith, who died before the show aired. The music is by Peter Bernstein, but the main theme was contributed by dad Elmer (who also conducted the score). It has echoes of 'The Magnificent 7' but the lengthy intro takes a while to get around to it.
