Decided to head up to check out the elusive tower mounted refurbished chrome STH-10 in Elyria with Cameron since it was his birthday today and the FD confirmed it worked...happy birthday Cameron! Aaron (Ohio Outdoor Warning Sirens) also joined us for the test.
I have to say I wasn't expecting it to be that loud. This was my first STH-10, and it sure did impress and boy they sure are loud! These things really rattle your chest too. You'll notice that the siren shakes when it's sounding; this is because it's not truly anchored down onto the tower it is mounted on. All in all was a great test. The coast down on these things sure take forever. This STH seemed to take longer than the Thunderbeam I filmed last October did.
This STH is lower-pitched, probably running off 208V 3 Ph or a phase converter. It is definitely a three phase model since it's an older Federal Sign & Signal STH-10 model. I cut out the last minute of the coast down since it was barely audible due to all the road noise.
I can't say I really expected it to work at all, and was pretty convinced it was going to fail. I sure got a big surprise once 6 PM rolled around. Anyways, enjoy!
Elyria Township tests this siren every day at 6 PM for a short blast (possibly excluding Sundays).
