A quadrangular building with a central courtyard and massive towers at the four corners, with opposite but staggered entrances and preceded by ravelins on a moat. The corner towers especially the two on the eastern side, probably the oldest, although we have no documentary evidence of this - are very protruding in plan compared to the curtain walls and also to the buildings, given that these are designed to remain within the size of the towers that flank them. The ravelin on a pointed arch in front of the northern entrance shows traces of a drawbridge and is partly reminiscent of that of the castle of Pavia.
