Altoé Castle is a medieval castle located in Altoé, a hamlet of the Italian municipality of Podenzano, in the province of Piacenza. The castle stands in the Po Valley, near the Nure River, which was forded near the castle by the road that, since Roman times, connected Piacenza to the Arda Valley. The name likely derives from the Latin octavum, meaning "eight miles" from Piacenza. Built of stone and brick, the castle has a highly irregular rectangular plan, due to the position of the surrounding structures: on the southeast side, in the center, is a tower that once served as an entrance with a drawbridge, as evidenced by the traces of attacks. On the south side, there is another tower, external to the building's profile, which has the characteristics of a keep, with dovetail battlements and lancet windows. The complex is surrounded by a moat, originally supplied with water and later filled in. In the courtyard is a portico with five arched arches, with two sides walled in for residential purposes. The structure's appearance is the result of a 19th-century restoration carried out by architect Angelo Colla, who, during the same period, also oversaw the restoration of Riva Castle, located in the municipality of Ponte dell'Olio, about ten kilometers to the south. In keeping with the customs of the time, the restoration considerably altered the castle's appearance.
