The original nucleus of the castle was built between the XII century and was a fiefdom of the campsites (an aristocratic family of the Guelph part of Pavia). Between 1334 and 1404 he passed to the Folperti family of water heaters which he had undertaken by the architects Milanino De Saltariis, Bernardo and Martino De Soncino, the construction on the south side of the original castle, of the receptor, a vast fortified rectangular courtyard capable of collecting the entire population of the country in case of necessity. Subsequently, the Marquises Malaspina, new feudal lords of water heaters, embellished the castle with a portico and a loggia and made some rooms fresco. It was this building complex, with its seven medieval towers, the vaults and the Renaissance fireplaces, to host over time some illustrious characters including in 1491 Isabella d'Aragona, daughter of Alfonso Duke of Calabria and promised bride of Gian Galeazzo Sforza Duke of Milan, in 1497 the emperor Massimiliano I d'Asburg and in 1533 Charles V of Habsburg. Between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries the castle was the subject of countless ownership passages: Filippo Maria Visconti, Toltolo to the Folperti family in 1430 gave it in 1436 to the Ducal Chamber of Commerce Messer Innico I D'Avalos son of Roy López Dávalos Conte of Ribadeo and then naming it in 1444 to renounce the same. Francesco I Sforza returned it to the Folperti in 1451 In 1577 he was transferred to Count Rinaldo Tettoni, who sold it to Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio of Como in 1582 whose heirs, the Gallio Trivulzio Duchi d'Alvito, alienated the local properties to their level Carlo Brielli in 1799 who, three years later, gave them in the perpetual investiture to the noble Giovanni Antonio Strada di Garlasco, to whom he still belongs. The castle has the typical layout of the Visconti fortifications of the plain, with the buildings forming a rectangular central courtyard with a brick well in the centre - bordered by corner towers equipped with external battlements, a moat and a barbican with a drawbridge at the entrance. Its building typology is however characterised in the Lombard panorama by the presence, to the south, of the ricetto which is made up of three buildings joined to the castle with two twin towers and a central one corresponding to the eastern entrance. Overall, the complex includes five towers: one serves as the entrance to the ricetto, while the remaining ones are placed at the corners of the castle.
