While I normally do electronics work on the weekends, I decided to evaluate a tape deck at the end of my workday.
Whenever I work on a tape deck, a final step for me is to adjust and confirm the speed.
I have a number of trusted tapes with a 1khz tone which were recorded off of a Technics direct drive quartz lock cassette deck.
I recorded the 1khz tone from a tone generator I found on the web. And I connect the tape deck playing that tape into my computer using a program called Audio Tester.
I look for the peak, audio level and compare it to what 1 kHz should be. And then I adjust the playback motor whether it be behind the motor itself (most likely) or on the main board of the cassette deck (less likely).
Here’s an overview of that process using a Denon tape deck I picked up for $10 at an estate sale last weekend.
