...One of the problems with fire rolling inner barks & other coarse fibers is stopping them coming apart when rolling them. If you use wood ash as a binder this usually isn't a problem but some other binders don't always provide enough grip to keep the roll compacted.

...I was experimenting with dry galangal leaves as a binder but I just couldn't stop the roll coming apart when I tried to roll it. Then I remembered seeing David West using green leaves as a binder so I thought I'd try some green galangal leaf to see if the moisture could help bind the roll together.

...Staight away I noticed better compaction & I managed to coax an ember from it without it coming apart. You would think the moisture in the leaf would surpress the ember but the heat generated from the rolling is hot enough to displace this moisture as steam.
