Byland Abbey is a ruined abbey in North Yorkshire, England in the North York Moors National Park. It was made a Cistercian Abbey in 1147. The design of the church was one of the most elaborate attempted for a Cistercian Abbey at that time. There are standout decorative 13th century floor tiles all around the ruins. The large, imposing ruins still give an idea what life was life for the monks and lay brothers that lived at the abbey.

It is now an English Heritage site and well worth a visit. The volunteers on site are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful too.
