In this second session of "Breaking Open the Head: A History Of The Psychedelic Renaissance", I explore how the Enlightenment—while liberating in many ways—also exiled the soul from Western culture. Drawing on philosophers like Adorno, Horkheimer, and Walter Benjamin, I look at how the magical and animistic worldview was suppressed, only to return in distorted forms through capitalism, surveillance, and control.
We move through the 20th century—from the rise of psychoanalysis to the surrealist revolt, and on to the counterculture of the 1960s. I trace how artists, poets, and mystics tried to recover the sacred through altered states—and how these efforts were often neutralized by the dominant system.
This lecture is also a critique of the psychedelic renaissance itself. As psychedelics are brought back into psychiatry and corporate wellness, we have to ask: are we still missing the deeper truth these substances reveal?
