When suffering becomes the basis of authenticity, you get a culture addicted to its own wounds.

The sociologist Eva Illouz argues that contemporary subjectivity is built through a narrative of victimization. The therapeutic mode, she writes, "paradoxically privileges suffering and trauma." Borrowing from art critic Robert Hughes, she describes the result as a "democracy of pain," a "culture of complaint" in which the dominant therapeutic narrative "ironically creates much of the suffering it is supposed to alleviate." Once suffering becomes the basis of authenticity, the subject has a perverse incentive to perform, protect, and amplify its own wounds.

Identity built on injury is a trap you can't get out of.
