The difference between the Japes method and this one is that you use wet storage in order to get an invisible boulder. However, you need to keep some distance between you and the spot where you store the boulder or else it will return to Chunky once he's on the ground. Since I wasn't aware of that, I never thought this was possible.

Note that faster and easier boulder lag strategies have been found: youtube.com/watch?v=KpxVei8fi9U

Get one of the boulders and place it on the bottom of the island. Go under the ground using Swim Through Shores and pick up the boulder from below. Now jump down and walk toward the water to store the rock, but make sure the you're not too close to the secret room. You can also store the rock near K. Rool island.
Swim up to the secret room and jump after Chunky vanishes. If done correctly, he will be holding thin air. If the boulder appears in Chunky's hands, you failed the trick because the actual boulder was too close to the room.
To dupe the boulder fast and conveniently, stand close to the back wall facing away from it. Mash R until the outside area shows up. Then mash C-left or C-right to load the room again. Every time you load the isles, a new boulder is loaded in the storage spot.
You can also jump out of the room and enter it again, but that is obviously slower.

When you exit the room, the camera might flip around and freeze the game if you stored the rock on underneath DK island. To prevent this from happening, get on top of the leftmost or rightmost terminal and slowly inch your way forward as you jump.

When you're done duping, you can do all sorts of crazy stuff just like in Japes: Ridiculously far jumpkicks and moonkicks, unusual movement in mid-air, unintentional clipping when you're trying to moonkick...

...and this: youtube.com/watch?v=Tpizx2kWvfg

An interesting thing happens when you return to the place where you stored the boulder: The game will seem to freeze, but if you wait for a while, it will actually unfreeze and sometimes "teleport" you in the direction you were going before it froze. Apparently since the framerate goes down to 0, which obviously is a massive lag spike, your speed will increase significantly for a few frames depending on how many times you duped the boulder. Also, during the lag spike, the duped boulders completely disappear, which is what allows the game to unfreeze and send you off at an enormous speed. The "rock boost" can even put you out of bounds and send you back to the start. It is also possible to explore the out of bounds area with this trick.

If you create too much lag and enter a tag barrel, the game will truly freeze. However, you can turn the camera away from the boulders to reduce the lag and prevent the game crash.

I should note that this trick also works in Caves.
