A regular visitor to wooded Santa Clarita backyards, this Red-Shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) is a fairly common bird of prey with a wingspan of nearly 4 feet! They typically prey upon lizards, mice/rats, snakes and other small critters. On this day, the hawk stayed around for at least an hour, and changed perches several times. With a bit of patience, this allowed me to film several nice take-offs and even one landing. While not apparent in these slow motion scenes, this hawk is quite fast, takes flight with only a second's notice, and is difficult at best to follow with the camera - especially when zoomed... This footage was shot with a Casio EX-F1 Pro at 300 frames per second, resulting in footage that appears 10 time slower than life. The footage was slowed even more in software, so what you see is about 1/20th real-time speed in most scenes.
