On October 5, 1944, the men of Easy Company engaged German forces in what became known as the Battle of the Crossroads. Positioned between the Rhine and Waal Rivers on the narrow stretch of land called “The Island” in the Netherlands, Easy Company held a critical defensive line following Operation Market Garden.
German troops were preparing a counteroffensive to recapture The Island and the vital bridge at Nijmegen when their movements were detected during an early morning patrol. In response, Captain Richard Winters quickly organized another patrol to strike the advancing enemy. What followed was a fierce and decisive engagement that would become one of the most celebrated actions in Easy Company’s history: the Battle of the Crossroads.
