Into the next chapter, but still not into a new map as there's some important story bits to go through first. Baudimon's gotta find out what exactly his father's request is all about, but en route to the throne room he runs into his other two brothers. Mortimer seems all chill, but Randall? To say there's a feud between him and Baudimon is underselling the point.
As if to drive in that point...Baudimon's father, Thorngrim, and his request. As it turns out, the dragons of the nation of Timaet have begun building fortifications in the nearby Emperor Mountains, a dozen in the past month alone. Why Timaet is doing this is unknown, but their manakete king, Baathu, is sending his son Tendaris out for a meeting. Thorgrim wants someone to head out and meet him to talk things through and find out what's going on.
Randall asks to be sent out, but Thorgrim refuses, stating Randall needs to be by his side when he passes on as Thorgrim's health is declining rapidly. Randall then asks for Mortimer to go, but even he turns it down since he has too much on his plate at the moment. Suffice it to say Randall's not happy when he realized that it's Baudimon who's being sent out, but Thorgrim's word is final.
Before leaving, Thorgrim is sending one of his royal guard to watch over Baudimon and his squad and, as Baudimon finds out, isn't exactly the one guy he wants to be breathing down his neck, Fred. He too has no choice but to accept.
The next morning, Baud meets with Mortimer and his cousin, Isabelle. Isabelle is tasked with city guard duties so she can't come along, but Mortimer doesn't want Baud to go without some additional protection and presents something very interesting...the holy blade of House Lightbringer, Dawncaller.
It's here where Baudimon needs to make a very important decision...does he accept Dawncaller or not? One would think taking a free weapon would be the easy choice...but not taking it causes several changes in who interacts with Baudimon as well some gameplay changes. Neither option is the wrong one and both offer some unique options throughout the game, something that I feel is a boon to the hack, encouraging multiple playthroughs to see everything.
For this playthrough, Baud's taking Dawncaller and boy is it a great weapon. Infinite durability, 1-2 range, and its a magic weapon, meaning it uses the wearer magic against the target's resistance. Also, it boosts its wearer's luck & resistance by 10.
Oh, and if the free weapon wasn't great enough, Mortimer gives Baud 10k gold for purchases.
If you don't take Dawncaller, you still get the 10k gold, but Mortimer gives Baud a Silver Blade instead.
Back to the story...Baud's team is marching towards the Emperor Mountains to meet up with Tendaris and Fred is not making the journey the most smoothest with his insistence on getting there in a timely manner, even forgoing the fact the team notices some village spewing smoke everywhere. Somehow, Jakka manages to convince Fred to ride on ahead to Castle Speargarden to have rooms prepared for everyone to rest at. He's a bit of an idiot isn't he?
Anyways, Baud's group runs north and their fears are confirmed...villages are being attacked, instigated by ships that hail from the nation of Hornheim. Only one thing to do...drive the attackers out!
Enter in to the first preparations screen where you're able to select who you want in your lineup for the chapter, arrange what they bring into battle, and decide where everyone that isn't forced on a particular chapter goes.
