...As I said last week practicing at home is great but the real test, for me, is to see if you can recreate what you've learnt out in the field.
...This week I wanted to attempt the alternative coupling method for a hand drill host spindle with gathered materials so first stop was a roadside Malayan cherry tree that are continually shedding their lower branches as they grow. That was the hearth board & insert sorted then on the way up the mountain I came across a straight enough section on an unknown sapling that would serve as the host spindle.

...I found a secluded rock overhang & got the set together. The host spindle wasn't the straightest but with a bit of tweaking I managed to get it to work after a couple of attempts & took it to flame with a grass tinder bundle lined with some kapok
