Today (Sunday July 12) I had the pleasure of giving an organ concert together with three fellow organists to celebrate the completion of the extensive restoration of the magnificent 1854 Bätz-Witte organ in the Grote Kerk of De Rijp, the Netherlands.
The final piece of the concert, brilliantly performed by Frank van Wijk, was the Rondo Finale from a collection of 18 Pieces for Organ or Pianoforte by Christian Friedrich Ruppe. It is a dazzling virtuoso work, and Frank gave a truly outstanding performance.
Naturally, my curiosity was sparked. After returning home, I downloaded the collection and couldn’t resist recording one of its more modest gems before calling it a day. Sometimes the quieter pieces have a charm all of their own.
Christian Friedrich Ruppe (1753–1826) was a German-born composer, organist, conductor, and music educator who spent most of his career in the Netherlands. After settling in Leiden, he became one of the country’s leading musical figures, serving as city organist and later as the first professor of music at Leiden University.
Ruppe composed symphonies, chamber music, keyboard works, sacred music, and songs in the elegant Classical style. Although highly respected during his lifetime, much of his music has fallen into obscurity. His keyboard music is full of charm, clarity, and craftsmanship, making it well worth rediscovering today.
I hope you enjoy this delightful miniature, performed on another beautiful instrument by the same builder: the Bätz organ of the Lutheran Church in The Hague, recreated in Hauptwerk.
