After our last adventure at Old Town Abilene and The Dickinson County Historical Society we couldn't wait to return for another visit! Fortunately the opportunity presented itself when The Historical Society hosted it's annual Heritage Days festival in the first week of October. Members of the society and the local community came together to demonstrate and reenact how life in early Abilene was lived. This time the buildings were all open and many of the displays were out for all to see and enjoy. We got to speak with many of the hosts and learn a lot about the history and way of life of Abilene through the years. From demonstrations of rural craftsmanship, to car and tractor shows, the event had something for all of our interests. We highly recommend visiting this historic and beautiful town!
As an added bonus we took a walk down the street to Old Town Abilene to find that the buildings were open for viewing this time so of course we took advantage and explored some more. Unfortunately the gunfighters were done for the season so we did not catch any reenactments. However, we are positive that this will not be our last visit so we will definitely catch the act in the future.
If you ever have the opportunity to visit Abilene, we suggest that you definitely pay a visit to the Historical Society and Old Town! Its a wonderful experience for the whole family!
