I really needed to have an adventure! I reminded myself that adventures don't have to be big to be hugely fulfilling so we headed to the coast with some friends. We had a van camp in Saltburn-by-the-Sea and headed over to Redcar in the morning. Locke Park is stunning and the team at Redcar parkrun are second to none. The locals didn't disappoint when it comes to having the best sense of humour and I spend the fist parts of the morning laughing lots and with a huge grin on my face.
After we saw the ambulance speeding into the park then the whole feel of the morning changed in an instant. Whilst the speed of the first aid that the gentleman received after he suffered a cardiac arrest meant that this story had a positive ending, the experience of seeing someone being worked on by paramedics stays with you. Poppy was very scared seeing someone having a defib used on them so we spent the last mile unpacking what she had just witnessed and talking about the importance of first aid. For sensitivity reasons I haven't named the gentleman involved, but we checked in with the parkrun team and doctors were pleased with his progress after he was brought out of his induced coma. We wish him a full and speedy recovery.
I can't tell you how thankful and proud I felt of the parkrun community here at Redcar parkrun. If there's a manual on 'How to deal with an emergency at parkrun' then surely this team wrote the book. They couldn't have handled the situation any better. I feel so lucky to be part of parkrunworld and to get to meet communities such as this one... And that's what I'm taking away from our morning in Redcar. Well, that and the fact that herons nest in trees and that lemon top ice creams exist! Who knew one parkrun morning could be so eventful!
Not done with our mini adventure we headed back to Saltburn-by-the-Sea, met our friends, ate more ice cream and then headed over to Roseberry Topping to climb for the view.
