More renewables are needed to reduce Europe’s CO2 emissions and face energy dependency. But to increase the share of renewables a higher energy storage capacity must be ensured.

Nowadays, the dominating technology providing electricity storage is pumped hydro. However, this is a limited resource as its maximum potential estimated is around 150 GW.

To achieve the 100% Renewable Energy Sources target by 2050, the European Association for Storage of Energy estimates the electricity storage needs in 600 GW.

In this frame, what if we told you that there is an innovative energy storage system under development?

Let’s see how the CHESTER project has developed for the first time a laboratory prototype of a CHEST system.

The prototype has successfully been commissioned and tested, demonstrating for the first time a stable operation of the CHEST system.

Further research and innovation are still necessary to bring the technology to real scale, but the results developed by the CHESTER project have been key towards a smart and flexible renewable energy management system for the future.

CHESTER: towards an efficient energy storage solution for Europe.
