These powerful transformations, known as the twin transition, hold great promise but also risk deepening existing inequalities.
In urban mobility, digital platforms enable shared services that reduce emissions and private vehicle use, but may leave behind those without digital skills or reliable internet access.
Additionally, as private companies often lead the digital transition, they may prioritise profits over public interest.
Innovative farming technologies in the agri-food sector help to protect ecosystems while managing resources efficiently.
However, adopting these practices requires advanced skills and increasingly complex regulatory knowledge, putting underserved farmers with limited training and support at a disadvantage, and widening the gap with large agribusinesses.
The EU research project READJUST aims to address these issues by identifying, analysing, and mitigating inequalities within mobility and agri-food sectors.
For this purpose, READJUST is developing the READJUST Observatory, a collection of tools, that offers concrete methods for mapping and addressing inequalities related to the twin transition policies.
The Observatory includes a policy tracker to systematically analyse policies, and an inequality index to identify areas – such as job opportunities, access to digital infrastructures or education – where certain groups may be disadvantaged.
It also features an equality self-assessment tool to enable policy makers to assess their performance in advancing equality, and a policy action roadmap, complete with best practices and recommendation,
READJUST collaborates with stakeholders from industry, policymaking and civil society to co-develop and validate policies that promote a fair transition.
Through these efforts, READJUST aims to foster inclusivity and pave the way for an equitable future for all.
