The COVID-19 pandemic and the energy crisis resulting from the Russian war in Ukraine have impacted our current climate emergency and our transition towards a low-carbon economy.
Both these events have accelerated political decisions in order to face the necessary structural changes that will reshape the economy in the European Union in the upcoming decades.
The foundation of these decisions is based on redoubling the commitment to energy transition and decarbonization, focusing the European model on greater resilience in the three spheres of sustainability: economy, society and environment.
In addition to the climate and energy actions that guide the economy towards a low-carbon path, efforts focused on improving issues related to employment, health, and equality in the European and international context have also been included.
We must ensure that the most appropriate structural measures are implemented. Therefore, good use of modelling tools in the energy-social-economic-environmental sphere is essential to address the complex challenges we face.
The scientific community must be able to evaluate disparate and changing scenarios, incorporating the uncertainties associated with such a changing context into all analytical models.
With this in mind, Red Mentes is born, integrating 9 Spanish multidisciplinary research groups specialised in energy modelling from different perspectives.
The main objectives of this network are aimed at seeking synergies and complementarities among the groups, identifying and aligning research priorities in line with society's challenges and goals, creating a reference group to support decision-makers and all agents involved, encouraging the creation of new modelling capacities to increase the questions our models can address and disseminating key science-based results.
The Red Mentes project puts together a set of modelling tools for the betterment of society that allows us to analyse and propose solutions to the challenges and strategic decisions that will reshape the foundations of a resilient and sustainable energy and economic European system.
Moreover, the multidisciplinary nature of the network and the group, shared learning allows us to offer those tools to guide society and the economy towards socially and economically fairer, low-carbon models which are more respectful of the planet's limits.
