So, today we are out and about walking back at the disused Thames & Severn Canal for an autumnal amble. This was at the request of fellow OAAW walker 'Mike' as he says he watches the previous video: youtu.be/iAIpf2LHpzs every night and would love to see it walked again but in the opposite direction for a different perspective / viewpoint.
As it transpired, it worked out well because on the previous walk we could not finish the walk at the intended spot of a bridge as my camera run out of power about a quarter of a mile just before the bridge (also it had scaffolding up for renovation work), so this time around we got to start the walk actually from the bridge :). Also, it is worth noting that this is the first walk with a new camera which was recently released by DJI...the much & eagerly awaited Osmo Pocket 3...it's a game changer!
The canal was opened in 1789 and reached the height of its commercial success around 1850, but due to competition from the railways, the use of the canal was to steadily decline over the next 60 years or so, until it finally closed in 1927.
The Tunnel House was originally built as a hostel for the men who were digging the tunnel. It is hard to imagine just how hard and physically demanding the digging of the tunnel would of been! The Sapperton Tunnel is nearly 3.5 km in length, construction of the tunnel was started in 1784 and was completed just in time for the grand opening of the canal in 1789. The very last cargo to pass through the tunnel was on May 11th in 1911.
As we walk along the towpath, try to imagine what it would of looked like all those years ago when it was a hive of activity in its heyday.
There are no hidden OAAW logos in this video.
