Wagner Leitmotifs | 81 World Ash Tree : Der Ring Des Nibelungen @wagnerleitmotifs7654 | Uploaded September 2013 | Updated October 2024, 13 hours ago.
This leitmotif is first heard in act 1 scene 2 of Siegfried.
This motif represents the World Ash Tree, the tree of life which is guarded by the Norns, from which Wotan removed a branch in order to make his spear. The tree subsequently died showing the destructive nature of the pursuit of power on the innocent. The tree is later cut up and put around the walls of Valhalla, so that heaven and all who dwell there in are destroyed as Siegfried's funeral pyre blazes up. This motif is derived from the Nature motif but in the minor key, since the tree was destroyed, so it is similar to Erda.
