This leitmotif is first heard in act 2 scene 4 of Die Walkure.
This motif represents Fate. It is one of the most prolific motifs in the cycle. Although sometimes its use can be related directly to what is happening on stage, often this is not the case and it is better to think of it popping up throughout the operas as a constant reminder that everything is predetermined and so there's nothing much that the characters can do to avert the course of events.
It is first heard in the mini prelude to scene 4 of act 2 in Die Walkure. At this point Wotan is about to give his dire orders to Brunhilde to ensure that Siegmund is killed by Hunding.
The motif itself has a terribly ponderous sense, it exudes foreboding from every interval. The tune, as it were, is the same as is found in the Dragon motif.
