Wagner Leitmotifs | 35 Broken : Tannhäuser @wagnerleitmotifs7654 | Uploaded July 2014 | Updated October 2024, 16 hours ago.
This leitmotif is first heard in the prelude to act 3.

This uneasy motif, firs heard as a forbearance of what is to come, insinuates itself most prominently as Tannhäuser tells Wolfram of his disastrous pilgrimage to Rome during which he is denied absolution by the priest. It represents the way Tannhäuser's spirit has been broken utterly at all his effort being for naught.
