Ever make two perfect miter cuts...same length, same angle...and they still don’t line up? It’s not just you.
Miter cuts behave differently than rips or crosscuts. Rips go with the grain, crosscuts go across it. They're predictable...there's resistance but you know what you to expect. Miters? You’re slicing at an angle through the grain, and that creates more resistance. The blade wants to deflect...especially with fine angles or thin stock.
That deflection means your cut face may not be straight...even if the angle’s correct. So when you try to join the two pieces, they don’t meet cleanly. It’s not your measurement...it’s the way the stock reacts during the cut.
Here’s the fix:
Start by cutting the first miter on each piece, clamping a block to butt against on your fence. Then, take one of those off-cuts and use it as your stop block. That angled scrap becomes a perfect backer for your next cut.
When you press your workpiece into it, you’re matching geometry...angled face to angled face...so there’s no slippage and no flex. The stock stays still, the blade tracks true, and your miters actually meet.
It works at any angle. Just match the wedge and clamp it in place to remove the frustration.
