Card scrapers work by using a tiny burr...formed by pressing a harder piece of steel at an angle across the edge. You’re not cutting. You’re rolling. Like mushrooming the end of a steel rod...only this mushroom is razor sharp.
That hook slices off ultra-thin shavings and leaves a finish smoother than any sandpaper...no grit, no dust...just shine.
But getting that burr? It’s a chore. You’ve got to hold the burnisher just right, work one side at a time, and hope your pressure’s even. It’s slow, it’s finicky and not always consistent.
The Accu-Burr solves that with a notched rod that lets you roll both edges at once.
But if you have a forge, you can make your own.
Before heat treating, I used a triangular file to cut a shallow groove into O1 tool steel. I chucked it in the lathe to spin slowly while filing, but you could just rotate it in a vise...it doesn’t take much.
After the heat treat, I polished the rod to a mirror finish and added a pair of wooden handles.
Now that groove locks in the scraper’s edge, giving you a repeatable, controlled burr...both sides, same time, no slipping.
