If you’ve ever used a card scraper, you know they get really hot as you use them.My Accu-Burr scraper came with a magnet, which helps keep your thumbs from burning. Any refrigerator magnet will do...it’s a great trick.
But that heat has a second problem: it can cause the fragile burr to wear out quickly.
To control the heat, there’s a four-step method I use with the magnet that works very well. First, make sure all four sides of your card scraper are burnished and ready to go.
I added an arrow to my magnet with a permanent marker.
This arrow points to the side I’m going to use.
I use the scraper until I feel the metal get hot…then I flip the magnet around, pointing it to the opposite side.
I’ll use that until it heats up, pull the magnet off, and flip it to the back face...then back to the opposite edge.
I’ll use that side until it gets hot, and flip it one last time.
This system, I’ve found, gives more life to my burrs before it’s time to burnish my edges again.
And a bonus with the magnet is that you’ve got something to rest the scraper on, so you don't damage the burr, or your table.
