I switched to a Glu-Bot, but got tired of dried glue clogging the high-tech vessel. Then I went back to the original glue bottle…and remembered why I switched in the first place.
Dried glue. So irritating.

But why does it happen? Wood glue dries as the water in it evaporates, and that can cause problems in two places. The small amount left inside the cap and nozzle can dry completely, while glue stored for a long time can gradually become thicker.
One way to help with the cap is to drill a hole in a 2x4 and store the glue bottle upside down. This keeps glue near the tip and makes it harder for that small amount inside to dry out.
But there’s still one more problem. The tip can glue itself shut no matter how hard we try to keep it clean.
The solution? Make a glue prybar.
Slip it underneath the cap and lift. It works every time, without fail. And if glue does dry inside the tip, flip the tool over and easily scrape the dried goo out.
And if the glue in the bottle has gotten thick, Titebond says most of their water-based wood glues can be thinned with up to 5% water. A very small amount can help bring the consistency back without over-thinning it.
I also have a glue-box design that stores the bottle upside down and includes this simple glue prybar. To see it, click over here.
