My favorite way to cut a dowel is with a bandsaw.
Not like this… but like this. A simple jig from Bitesize 15 makes it easier. With its V-groove bed, cutting is effortless.

The problem? Cutting multiple dowels takes time—you have to stop, measure each length, and getting straight, exact cuts can be frustrating. If you’ve got a lot to cut, it really slows you down. And if the dowel is too short? Forget it.
Instead, let’s switch to a handsaw.

A great jig I’ve seen uses a block with dowel holes and a hinged flap. Cut, slide the flap, push the dowel out—repeat.

But this setup limits you to specific dowel thicknesses.

We can do better with a V-groove—just like the bandsaw jig.

By making a single 45° cut on a 2x6, we create a quick V-groove base. This makes a universal dowel jig with no size restrictions. We’ll add an end cap on one side, working like the flap. But since you can pull the dowel from the top, there’s no need to push it out—flap eliminated.

Just tighten the jig in your vise, slide in the dowel, line up the blade with the precut mark, and cut.

Fast. Repeatable. Precise.
