The Church of the Brethren traces its roots back over 300 years to August of 1708. Schwarzenau, Germany was the site where 5 men and 3 women gathered at the Eder River for baptism. This act was considered illegal, since all had been baptized as infants, under a system of strong governmental control of the church. It was considered a capitol crime as there was low tolerance for religious diversity. This new group simply called themselves, 'brethren.'
The Brethren grew in numbers and began emigrating to North America in 1719 under the leadership of Peter Becker. By 1740, most had left Germany, with many settling near Philadelphia.
Brethren have been meeting annually, beginning in 1742 at Coventry, PA. The early conferences were often held at a family's farm, with thousands in attendance, traveling many miles by horse drawn wagons and buggies. The conferences started gathering every year, with the 4thAnnual Conference in 1777.
Over the years, Brethren have dealt with many practical questions of how to live out their faith. They've worked through many public issues such as war, slavery, death penalty, abortion, and environmental issues, helping to foster and develop the unique perspective of the Church of the Brethren.
Due to the pandemic, the 234thBrethren Annual Conference met virtually this year via ZOOM, with delegates and observers participating, from all over the country and world. We share a small portion of the activities that took place during the 5-day conference including compelling personal stories, music and drama with a celebration of life.
