I have been working at the same corporate company for nearly 10 years now, and there have been times when I questioned whether I should stay at the company or leave. This video I will go over what I've learned over the past 10 years of my career and some questions and thoughts to go through if you are in a similar situation or trying to get clarity on your career outlook.

Working at the same company helps with familarity with the systems, people and hopefully reputation. It helps to know who's who especially in a corporate setting; sometimes the unknown is worse than the "worst" at your current company. By knowing the key players, you can be strategic and make the proper moves. In addition, if you're seen favorably, having supported growth I think is better than growing by promotion at a new company. I would rather put myself in a stretch role around people I know, especially if they know how many years I have had performing at a high level prior. If you go to a new company, you need to prove yourself again since you don't have advocates. And finally if you do switch, showing that you have some kind of loyalty to a company looks better than someone who is constantly moving around. If companies are going to invest in their employees, they would rather invest in someone who appears they are going to stick around.

For me the biggest one is more strategic in that you only know one way of doing business/thinking. By moving to different companies you can see different ways of getting things done and can open your mind up more to what is possible. Sometimes also, especially if you aren't at a great company, there can be a tendency to become stagnant at you position, or even just getting comfortable.

If you don't feel like you are growing (and it's important to you), and you dont feel like you have support of management, and you've given it a couple years, I would move to a different company. If you don't even like the work, I would try to switch industries, because I feel like most companies have similar problems, just packaged differently.

Construction is a cool industry because you change projects every few years so it keeps things fresh. In addition, a lot of general contractors have profit sharing opportunities that can help increase you salary higher than if you just had the salary.
