Is college worth it? In this video I'll go over my biggest issues with college and the process students go through to get their degree. Though I have a BS and MS from college, there are things within the system that just don't make sense to me.

1. Are You Really Getting Value out of College
I did a video the other week about how much of my degree I actually use on a day to day basis. The answer was 9%. That's pretty ridiculous when you really think about it. With the average cost of college tuition per year being over $25k, that means for the 4 years you are at college you pay $100k for less than 10% of usefulness....doesn't quite add up.
2. Student Loans
Student loan debt is one of the worst debt you can accumulate. Especially if you are going into debt to get a degree for a career that isn't very lucrative. With the average student loan debt exceeding $35k, that'll mean you will pay over 10 years, about $371/month. With the average entry level salary out of college being $50k, after taxes that $371/month ends up being 10% of your paycheck just tossed out! That $371/month invested over that 10 year loan period would give you over $69k at an 8% return and that $69k left untouched for another 20 years would grow to over $300k! Unlike an appreciating investment like real estate, its very tough to substantiate taking out student loans unless your degree gets you a job that pays well enough to cover the costs.
3. College Differentiation and Rankings
Does it really matter where you get your degree from? To me, no. Part of my issue with colleges is that the professors are not necessarily there to teach. They are probably there (depending on the school) for research and making sure the university gets funding....teaching is like their "side thing". It's more important to me to use your time in college to gain experience and connections to set yourself up for a job. Colleges also don't seem to be ranked based upon graduate success. I think it would be more telling if the school's graduates had jobs in their industries with salaries higher than average. Might be a pipe dream, but that to me is what really matters and what I would want out of a college experience.
4. Timing Of Your Decisions
You need to make 2 big decisions at weird times of your life. Being a high school senior to determine where to go to college. And being a college sophomore deciding what to major in. You don't really know enough at these stages to make real decisions, and especially when there's big money on the line to decide, it is kind of a backwards system.
5. You Can Learn Pretty Much Anything Online For Free
Or at least at a fraction of the cost. Whether it's YouTube or any other course out there, you can certainly teach yourself everything you wanted to know about any topic. Unlike our parent's days, the information is so accessible nowadays it is tough to substantiate a six figure cost for a college degree. Especially if you're only getting 9% out of it.
