The preliminary report after the accident with Voepass flight 2283 has been released together with an animation showing what caused the aircraft to enter a flat spin. The preliminary report reveals that the aircraft was dispatched into forecasted severe icing, a condition outside the certification of the aircraft. Early in the flight, a critical ice protection system failed. And when the Aircraft Performance Monitoring (APM) system triggered warnings about loss of performance, the crew did not act. Finally, the aircraft had lost so much speed that the stall alert was triggered. The crew did not apply the correct procedure to recover, and they lost control.

On January 15, 2023, an ATR 72-500 from Yeti Airlines crashed while on approach to Pokhara International Airport in Nepal. Tragically, all 72 passengers and crew members lost their lives. In December 2023, the Nepalese Aircraft Accident Investigation Commission (AAIC) released their final report. It confirms that the propellers were feathered by moving both condition levers to the feather position, resulting in a loss of thrust from both propellers.

The flight crew was composed of two captains. Kamal KC, who occupied the right-hand seat, served as the commander and was responsible for providing familiarization training to Anju Khatiwada. Anju, seated in the left-hand seat, was the Pilot Flying (PF). Early reports incorrectly stated that Anju was a co-pilot set to become a captain after this flight. In reality, she was already a captain. Following this flight, she would be qualified to serve as a commander for flights to Pokhara International Airport. (Reference: Outlook India, see link above.)
The airport had been open for only two weeks, and because of the challenging terrain in the surrounding area, the airline required captains to complete familiarization flights. At that time, the instrument approach procedures had not yet been published, and the pilots had to operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). Due to the challenging terrain, landing on runway 30 was preferred, while runway 12 was used for take-offs.
Earlier in the day, Kamal and Anju had flown to Pokhara International Airport, landing on runway 30 and taking off from runway 12. The accident flight was their second trip to Pokhara that day.
When enroute, Kamal decided to let Anju land on runway 12. The approach to runway 12 was highly demanding and should have been thoroughly briefed before the flight. There wasn’t enough time to provide a detailed briefing in-flight. As they neared the airport, Kamal continued to brief Anju about the procedure.
In the final moments of the flight, both pilots were focused outside the cockpit. And when Anju requested flap 30, Kamal accidentally moved both condition levers to the feathered position. Feathering the propellers was a mistake, but it was not the sole cause of the accident.
The most likely cause was that neither pilot noticed that both propellers were feathered. They were faced with numerous indications: the SC warning, flashing MC lights, and three amber cautions on the CAP. Additionally, the overhead panel displayed 14 amber lights when there should have been none, and both the TQ and NP indicators showed 0. How did they overlook all of these warnings?
The EU has imposed a ban on all airline companies from Nepal, including Yeti Airlines. The primary reason is that the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAA Nepal) serves both as the regulatory and operational body. In 2022, ICAO formally requested that Nepal separate its civil aviation authority into two distinct entities—one for service provision and another for regulation.
Until this separation occurs, Nepalese airlines will remain banned by the EU. According to Firstpost, Nepal has one of the worst air safety records globally. Over the past 30 years, more than 50 flights have crashed in the country. While the challenging terrain and rapidly changing weather conditions contribute to the difficulties of aviation in Nepal, these factors should not excuse the high accident rate.
When facing challenging conditions, it’s crucial to implement measures to mitigate the risks. This may lead to flight cancellations, but it’s better than risking an accident. Safety efforts must begin at the top, with the government, followed by the Civil Aviation Authority, the airlines, and finally, the pilots.

A SIGMET had been issued, warning about severe icing in the area where the aircraft operated. No transport category aircraft types are certified to operate in severe icing, unless they are certified after 2015. And even they have restrictions.
Severe icing is a condition where the rate of ice accretion is such that anti-ice and de-ice systems may fail to reduce and control the hazard.

There are 2 checklists referring to “The standby busses and battery only lost equipment lists”: "DC generator 1+2 fault," and "DC standby bus failure." When both generators fail, the main battery will power the ESS bus, and both STBY busses. And the emergency battery will power the EMER bus. If the generators cannot be reset, we activate the TRU.
If the TRU doesn’t work, or if the aircraft does not have a TRU, the maximum flight time in IMC is limited to 30 minutes. This is the time it takes for the main battery to drain out. We also set the battery switch to override. This is a precaution in case the STBY busses didn’t switch to the main battery as they should.
When the voltage to the DC STBY bus is below 19.5 V, we get an UNDV alert. This means the main battery is almost empty, and we will soon lose the DC ESS bus and both STBY busses. Then, we are left with the emergency battery powering the EMER bus. All we have left, are enough systems to let you fly the aircraft, and talk with ATC, who can see you on the radar. But you cannot fly an instrument approach and land. To do that, you need to read the checklist for "STBY bus UNDV" which tells you to select STBY BUS OVRD.
Here is one important thing to remember: When those busses lose power, several indications and alerts will also disappear. Therefore, it is important to follow the checklists carefully.

Dharavandhoo Airport, located 60 NM from Malé, serves both local communities and luxury resorts in Baa Atoll. Opened in 2012, the airport boasts a 1,200-meter runway. The terminal is conveniently situated within walking distance of the village, allowing locals to check-in, return home for a meal, and come back just in time for their flight.
My journey with Villa Air began in 2012 as an instructor, where I enjoyed long stops at Dharavandhoo. These stops often included speedboat trips to a nearby resort for lunch and snorkeling. After three years, I moved on to new opportunities, but in 2022, I returned to the Maldives to fly with Island Aviation Services Ltd., also known as Maldivian.

According to a common belief, lift is created because the upper surface of a wing is more curved than the underside. When two air parcels are split by the wing, the parcel moving over the wing will have to travel a longer distance than the parcel under the wing before they meet behind the wing. This forces the parcel over the wing to move faster than the other. And, according to Bernoulli’s equation, an increase in velocity results in a reduction of static air pressure, which is lift. This is called the equal transit hypothesis. If this is correct, then how can an airplane fly upside down? This is what this video is about.
First, we must understand how a wing creates lift. Some say nobody knows for sure because it is too complicated. Some say it is Bernoulli. Some say it is Newton’s 3rd law of motion. Some say it is the Navier-Stokes equations. An engineer at Boeing once said: “It’s easy to explain how a rocket works, but explaining how a wing works takes a rocket scientist.” To kill one myth right away: Lift is very well understood by the engineers. They use the Navier-Stokes equations to predict how an aircraft produces lift. But only those with a degree in fluid dynamics will understand those equations.
What we need is an easy-to-understand explanation that kids, and pilots can understand, without getting the facts wrong. The two most common explanations are “pressure difference,” promoted by the Bernoulli supporters, and “Newton’s third law,” promoted by the Newton supporters.
When it comes to lift, it is not Bernoulli or Newton. They complement each other. Bernoulli is about flow speed, surface pressure, and conservation of energy. Newton is about force, flow direction, and conservation of momentum. We are looking at the same thing, but from a different point of view.

For those off you not familiar with turboprop operations, here is a short description of the engine start procedure:
1. Start one engine. It will run in feather (low RPM). Time: 30 sec.
2. Set the propeller control to AUTO or 100% (depending on engine variant). The propeller RPM will increase. Time: 30 sec.
3. Repeat for the other engine.
Starting both engines this way takes 2 minutes. This is how most pilots learn to start the engines, but by alterning the procedure, time and fuel is saved.
