Along with fellow classmates, she developed a non-electric warming blanket and launched it under the start-up, Warmilu.
Manufacturing blankets for more than a decade, Warmilu's mission is to prevent infant deaths from hypothermia across the globe, particularly in countries with limited resources.
Warmilu has brought their non-electric warming blanket to Kenya, where deaths from infant hypothermia are common, and the lack of stable electricity makes it difficult for hospitals to use incubators.
In addition to leading Warmilu, Hsia Haberl is an entrepreneurial management and leadership lecturer at Michigan Engineering and the U-M Center for Entrepreneurship.

The device is described in Advanced Materials and was made in the labs of Joerg Lahann, the Wolfgang Pauli Collegiate Professor of Chemical Engineering, and Abdon Pena-Francesch, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering and co-corresponding author. The researchers' screen could be used wherever light and power sources are cumbersome or undesirable, including clothing, stickers, ID badges, barcodes and e-book readers.
The screen displays images by programming magnetic pixels to flip to either orange or white faces in a specific magnetic field direction. The images can be programmed to be publicly read by any standard magnet or privately read by a specific magnetic grid, which acts as a key. The key reprograms specific pixels of the screen to temporarily have inverted flipping behavior and display a new image.

At the end of the season, the team with the highest normalized point total across all three events wins the first place Mike Schmidt Memorial Iron Team Award. Because of that, each competition matters, and the first challenge sets the pace.

Air curtain technology created by a U-M startup, Taza Aya, can attach to the brim of a hard hat and deflect 99.8% of aerosols from reaching a worker’s face, potentially offering a new protection option for workers in industries where respiratory disease transmission is a concern. Independent, third-party testing of the device showed the effectiveness of a downward-flowing air curtain, curved to encircle the face, coming from nozzles at the hat’s brim a few inches from the face. That curtain is just one part of the device’s defense against pathogens.
"Our air curtain technology is precisely designed to protect wearers from airborne infectious pathogens, using treated air as a barrier in which any pathogens present have been inactivated so that they are no longer able to infect you if you breathe them in," said Herek Clack, a U-M associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, and a Taza Aya co-founder. "It's virtually unheard of—our level of protection against airborne germs, especially when combined with the improved ergonomics it also provides."

“These are small, inexpensive cameras that can easily be mounted on the rearview mirror, the steering column or other places in the driver’s cockpit," said Mohammed Islam, U-M professor of electrical engineering and computer science who leads the project.
Utilizing cameras and artificial intelligence tools, the system can identify five signs that the driver may be impaired.

This development could help shift infrastructure from large structures that are stuck in place into structures that can be quickly deployed and repurposed.

The first half of the class will teach concepts in each of these areas, where electrical systems provide information collection, processing, and networking for all engineering fields. Laboratory sessions incorporate hands-on experiments to work with electrical circuits, solar cells, energy storage, micro-controllers, and wireless technology. In the second part of the class, students will work in teams to design, build, and test a wirelessly networked product that is self-powered by solar cells. The specific emphasis or challenge for the design project will change according to semester of offering.

We will cover:
- Key concepts and methods in genetic engineering and biotechnology including recombinant DNA technology, immobilization, and renewable energy - How to design a process by following engineering design principles with consideration of ethical and social implications - Written and oral communication in engineering contexts emphasizing audience analysis, writing strategies, genres of technical discourse, visual communication, collaboration, and professional responsibility.
Term Project: Design, build, and test a multi-step process to produce a biotechnological or biopharmaceutical product
Project 1: Production of biopolymer carriers (i.e. alginate hydrogels) for a variety of applications such as drug delivery or medicine and food manufacturing based on student interest Project 2: Production of biofuel ethanol from renewable biomass using genetically engineered microorganisms

When a system is built, its performance is measured and compared against expectations given the design. In this section, you will learn the skills to design, build and deploy a sensor package to measure the performance of a small rocket that you will also design and build. You will learn:

Timing stop lights is an important step to reducing congestion at an intersection, but the high maintenance cost makes it difficult for most cities to stay on top of it.
The University of Michigan research team proposes a cloud based re-timing system that uses anonymized trajectory data from connected vehicles to help create new timing plans.
It was piloted in Birmingham, Mich. and was used to re-time all of the city's 32 traffic signals, showing a major decrease to both traffic delay and the number of stops at an intersection. The system is a step up from current re-timing methods, which require traffic controllers to collect data by hand-counting cars during peak times at intersections. The widespread availability of trajectory data from connected vehicles will make it easy to scale the cloud based system, potentially bringing this to traffic control agencies nationwide.

Their research is centered around finding solutions to control soft robots without using tethered power supply's. They developed a non-metallic 'squishy' magnet that is light enough to add to soft robotic components and powerful enough to guide using magnetic fields. The magnets could be used in medicine to guide ingestible capsules to a targeted area in the body, or to insert implants. It's an exciting development that could have an impact on robotics, medicine and sustainability efforts.
