Israel has carried out more air strikes in Beirut and southern Lebanon, including on branches of a bank that it says is supporting Hezbollah. Explosions were heard in southern Beirut's Dahieh district, an area controlled by Hezbollah, as well as the Bekaa Valley and southern Lebanon. It is unclear whether there are any casualties. The Israeli military earlier warned people living in more than 20 areas in Lebanon - including 14 in the capital Beirut - that it planned to carry out strikes throughout the night. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also said it would target banks and other financial infrastructure supporting Hezbollah.

US Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday (October 19) repeated her call for a ceasefire in Israel's war in Gaza and said it was important to seize the opportunity provided by the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, a mastermind of the Oct. 7 attack. Harris acknowledged challenges ahead but told reporters she would continue to push for an end to the conflict. "This creates an opening that I believe we must take full advantage of - to dedicate ourselves to ending this war and bringing the hostages home," she said. "As it relates to the issues in the Middle East and in particular in that region, it has never been easy. But that doesn't mean we give up. It's always going to be difficult. We can't give up." Harris and Trump are essentially tied in the most competitive states like Michigan, with just 17 days until the Nov. 5 election.

The United States would like to see Israel scale back some of its strikes in and around the Lebanese capital of Beirut, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Saturday (October 19). "The number of civilian casualties have been far too high," he told reporters at a G7 defense gathering in the Italian city of Naples. "We’d like to see Israel scale back on some of the strikes it’s taking, especially in and around Beirut, and we’d like to see things transition to some sort of negotiation that will allow civilians on both sides of the border to return to their homes." Tens of thousands of people have fled Beirut's southern suburbs - once a densely populated zone that also housed Hezbollah offices and underground installations - since Israel began regularly targeting the zone approximately three weeks ago. Austin also said he could not confirm reports that North Korea has sent troops to Russia ahead of what could be a deployment to the war in Ukraine, but added such a move would be concerning, if true.

Indonesia's Prabowo Subianto on Sunday (October 20) took over as president of the world's third-largest democracy after sweeping the country's election with policies like free meals for school children and with the outgoing leader's son as his running mate. The inauguration ceremony was attended by several foreign dignitaries, including about 20 heads of state. China’s Vice President Han Zheng, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and East Timor’s Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao were among the guests at the event. The 73-year-old former special forces commander won the Feb. 14 contest with nearly 60% of the vote and has spent the past nine months building a formidable parliamentary coalition. Past allegations against Prabowo of involvement in the kidnapping of student activists and human rights abuses in Papua and East Timor, however, have also raised concern about Indonesia's trajectory of democracy, human rights advocates say.

Republican Donald Trump escalated his verbal attacks on Democrat Kamala Harris on Saturday as the vice president turned to celebrities to generate enthusiasm for her campaign, with both candidates for U.S. president courting early voters. Harris and Trump are essentially tied in the most competitive states and many Americans are voting early by mail or in person, with just 17 days until the Nov. 5 election. In Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Trump escalated his personal attacks on Harris, a practice some of his advisers fear could alienate swing voters. Trump said Harris is further to the left than Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. “You have to tell Kamala Harris that you’ve had enough, that you just can’t take it anymore. We can’t stand you, you’re a shit vice president.” As the crowd applauded, Trump added: “Kamala, you’re fired, get the hell out of here, you're fired.”

The Israeli military on Saturday released footage that it said showed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and his family in the hours before the October 7 attack on southern Israel. The video that the IDF said is from the night of October 6 in Khan Younis, shows the Hamas leader along with three children and a woman, described by the spokesperson of the army, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, as Sinwar’s children and wife, moving back and forth through a tunnel carrying various equipment including mattresses, water bottles and other objects. Hagari said that, throughout the war, Sinwar continued to hide underground and was forced to flee to Rafah when the Israeli military went into Khan Younis, both areas located in Southern Gaza Strip. According to Hagari, Sinwar's DNA "was found on a piece of tissue" a few hundred meters from the tunnel where six Israeli hostages were found dead in Tel al-Sultan, in Rafah, last month.

Israel struck what it said were Hezbollah arms facilities in southern Beirut on Saturday after the Lebanese armed group fired rockets into northern Israel and a spokesman said a drone was launched at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's holiday home. Netanyahu was not there at the time, and it was not immediately clear if the building was hit. But he described it as an assassination attempt by "Iran's proxy Hezbollah" and called it a "grave mistake", as Israel prepares to retaliate for an Iranian missile barrage earlier this month. The strikes came as medics and Hamas media in Gaza, where Israel has been fighting to root out the Palestinian militant group for more than a year, said Israeli bombardments had killed more than 100 people across the coastal enclave and a siege around three hospitals had tightened.

Obama was welcomed by a blue wave of supporters in the swing state of Nevada on Saturday (October 19) as he campaigned for Vice President Harris a few miles away from the Las Vegas strip. The former president remains an impactful figure among the Democratic base and is expected to energize voters as he looks to court voters in battleground states during the final push of a campaign relying on turnout from loyal Democrats in states where victory margins are thin. During his 40-minute speech, the former president acknowledged the tight election and encouraged his audience to vote. He also said he understood why, after a few difficult years following the pandemic, that people would want to shake things up, but said he believed Trump’s behavior shows he would not "shake things up in a way that is good for you."

The United Nations Sexual and Reproductive Health Agency is spearheading a new project in Kenya that is revolutionizing maternity healthcare by giving women in distant locations access to portable ultrasound equipment. By identifying pregnancy issues early on, these ultrasounds lower the death rate for both mothers and babies. This free service has helped more than 2,500 women in different counties since it was introduced in 2020. Midwives are also being taught to perform the scans, enabling medical professionals to provide life-saving treatments. Additionally, the program helps women understand the value of prenatal care, which greatly enhances their readiness for childbirth. For additional information, watch the video.

The threats led to the diversion of flights, emergency landings and delays. Affected airlines include Air India, IndiGo, Akasa Air, Vistara, SpiceJet, Star Air and Alliance Air flights. Royal air force planes escorted Air India’s Mumbai to London flight after the threat. IndiGo’s flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Istanbul also faced a bomb scare. Vistara’s Delhi to London flight was diverted to Frankfurt over security alert. Three international Vistara flights received bomb threats, which later turned out to be hoaxes. According to reports, over 45 flights faced bomb scares since the night of October 18. The Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation is mulling stringent penal rules for hoax callers. The government is reported mulling to put offenders on a “no-fly” list.
