Yuan Sheng is widely recognized as one of China’s most distinguished pianists, particularly celebrated for his profound interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach. Born in Beijing into a family of musicians, Sheng began studying piano at the age of five under the guidance of his mother, laying an early foundation for the artistic depth he would later develop. He continued his formal education at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, studying with esteemed professors Qifang Li, Huili Li, and Guangren Zhou, all of whom helped shape his strong technical and musical grounding.
In 1991, Sheng moved to New York City to study at the Manhattan School of Music as a scholarship student of the influential pedagogue Solomon Mikowsky. There, he completed both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees, refining his artistry within an international environment that exposed him to a wide spectrum of performance traditions. It was during this period that Sheng developed a deep and lasting connection to the music of Bach, inspiring him to pursue intensive study with the legendary Rosalyn Tureck, often regarded as the “High Priestess of Bach.”
