So who remembers You Bet!? Here's a complete episode of the classic ITV game show, hosted by Matthew Kelly and featuring a celebrity panel of Ted Robbins, Andrew Sachs, Bryan Murray, and Paul Ross. Originally broadcast on Friday, 1st October, 1993 (which surprised me a little, because I've always associated the show with Saturday evenings round my grandparents' house, but there you go), and the LWT ad breaks have been left in, too, for extra retro flavour.
Be honest: where else can you see a paintball team colouring in a giant logo, a 14-year-old identifying football kits only by their collar, a cross-country skier racing a horse and cart in Norway, two window cleaners trying to complete a street in 90 seconds, or a bloke riding a bike on a giant snooker table trying to score 120 with a polo mallet? But it's all good wholesome fun, plus they're playing for charity - and, without spoiling too much, they pass a particular milestone for the first time. Oh, and Nicola Stapleton makes a short appearance doing a forfeit earned in a previous episode.
When it comes to You Bet! in general, it really was quite a convoluted format and it's a credit to the production team that it was even watchable when you consider how much rigmarole each segment must have been. I remember the early days with Bruce Forsyth, and it was always the sort of programme you could watch as a family and make your own guesses and predictions as you went along. The one thing that's bothered me all these years, though, is the scoring system: you're essentially rewarded for going along with the crowd, as long as they're right, but if you're right while the majority are wrong, you get fewer points. Shouldn't you get _more_ for knowing better than most? Maybe I'm going mad. It's basically the Family Fortunes vs Pointless debate.
Anyway, as for the adverts, the Sharp Viewcam one caught my eye in the sense that it looks so normal to hold a camera with a screen directly in front of (but away from) your face now, yet that was completely revolutionary back then. I'm really not sure about the Kinder Surprise dubbing - if it's going to be that bad, why bother? Mention of the future World Cup being held in the USA in the American Airlines ad both centres it in its time while also feeling strangely topical ahead of 2026's offering (whether it actually takes place or not). Meanwhile, there's a nice little promo for Gladiators to look out for, too.
