In the novels, the Shadow Garden exists outside the framework of reality, described as a void beyond time where the concepts of existence and non-existence lose meaning. When Subaru first enters this space, he appears as a formless consciousness rather than having a physical body as depicted in the anime, and only gradually begins to take shape over time.
While in the Shadow Garden, Subaru is overwhelmed by an intense and all-consuming love for Satella, who resides there.
