If you thought this episode of Re:Zero was gruesome, it was actually heavily nerfed twice, first from the web novel to the light novel, and again from the light novel to the anime adaptation.
In the original web novel, the cave sequence plays out very differently. Subaru initially takes the left path and encounters the Hungry Horse King, resulting in one of his most brutal deaths where he is completely incinerated and his body is described as melting away. This entire encounter was removed in both the light novel and the anime.
That experience directly shapes his next loop, where he chooses the right path instead. However, this decision comes with unintended consequences as he forgets to ask Ram about Rem. That small mistake escalates tension between them, leading Ram to question Subaru’s intentions and triggering a deeper conflict influenced by the miasma. Compared to the anime, this chain of events feels far more natural and tightly connected in the web novel.
The web novel is also significantly more graphic overall, with extremely detailed and visceral descriptions that are heavily toned down in the light novel and even further censored in the anime. Across multiple scenes, including Subaru’s deaths and interactions with Patrasche, the original text goes far beyond what was adapted.
Even the final confrontation with the Hungry Horse King was heavily altered across versions, with major cuts in the anime, though all adaptations ultimately converge toward Shaula’s arrival.
