🚨 SPOILER WARNING 🚨 What's up Geekly Goods fam! 😭 If you haven't seen X-Men '97 Season 2 yet, go watch it and then come back, because this ending needs to be talked about.
After Cable shoots Gambit directly in the head trying to stop Apocalypse, it doesn't work. Gambit fully transforms into Death with a chilling smile, and Apocalypse takes complete control. One by one, the X-Men fall until only Professor X remains standing. Just as all hope seems lost, Rogue arrives wielding newly granted Celestial powers, reaches directly into Gambit's mind, and rips Apocalypse out with her bare hands, sealing his essence inside a gem before handing it off to Cable. Just like that, Gambit is finally free.
But there's a catch. Rogue had made a bargain with the Celestial Eson the Searcher, agreeing to sacrifice her own life in exchange for the power needed to save Remy. As she prepares to pay that price, Beast arrives holding Nightcrawler's Bible instead, and Nightcrawler himself is nowhere to be found. It turns out Kurt secretly went to the Celestial's realm himself, offering to take Rogue's place. When challenged on why he'd do this, he simply replies, "Not to challenge it, but to complete it," rooted entirely in his faith that his sacrifice will lead to something greater.
Then the post-credits scene drops an even bigger bombshell. A news broadcast reveals that Graydon Creed, Nightcrawler's own mutant-hating half-brother, has just been elected President of the United States. Moments later, we see who appears to be Valerie Cooper reviewing a file on Mystique, only for the real Valerie Cooper to walk in and get shot by her own impersonator, confirming Mystique has been posing as her all along. This sets the stage for a much darker, more politically charged Season 3.
