Fragmentation bombs are designed to damage thin-skinned structures and cause personnel causalities by high velocity splinter strikes. Parafrags should be released at an altitude range between around 100 to 400 feet.
The lower altitude value is to allow the bomb to arm in 2.5 seconds and the upper bound is to keep the bomb from drifting in the wind. A lower altitude Parafrag attack is advantageous for bomb placement accuracy, surprising enemy defenses, increase the pattern strike density area, and allow a plane safe distance from bomb fragments. A Parafrag bomb strike is 3 times more effective than fin stabilized fragmentation bomb strike of the same size. This is due to the Parafrags near vertical strike angle, and slower target strike speed.
