In 1945 the US air forces questioned 20 German POW fighter pilots to provide their opinion of US fighters and armaments. They all agreed the P-51 mustang to be the best US fighter. Their opinions differed on the combat effectiveness of the .50 caliber machine guns. Some felt their 20mm and 30mm auto-cannons were superior to the .50 caliber guns. One seasoned pilot felt the .50 caliber was optimized for air to air engagements with fighters.
