This platter was turned from Southern Yellow Pine, a strong and character-rich timber known for its bold grain lines and warm, golden colour. The blank was mounted on a Record Power Coronet Herald wood lathe and carefully shaped using Easy Wood Tools carbide woodturning tools, providing smooth, controlled cuts and a clean, flowing platter form.
Once the turning was complete, the surface was refined with Yorkshire Grit abrasive paste to achieve a smooth finish and really highlight the natural grain and colour variations of the pine. A finishing wax was then applied to protect the surface and add a soft sheen, enhancing the depth and warmth of the wood.
The result is a well-balanced platter that showcases the natural beauty of Southern Yellow Pine, combining traditional timber with modern woodturning techniques for a simple yet striking finished piece.
