Sometimes you get lucky. While going out with the dogs one day I noticed an orchard where people were busy taking out some trees. Pear Trees; highly desired as firewood and hence they have a certain market value. Not easy to get hold of. However, on my way back I stopped and just asked if I could have some of it for my lathe. Fully against my expectations the owner said I could take what I wanted(!) So I did and I promised to make him a bowl in return!
When I got back home with half a trailer full I just had to take one piece and turn it straight away! This was my first time turning Pear and I can only say it was a delight! This wood cuts like butter when it is green. The moisture was spraying everywhere and the whole shop smelled of Pears. I had to clean my lathe afterwards but the experience was certainly worth it!
