"Wonderful Tonight" is a personal love ballad written and performed by Eric Clapton. It was a modest hit upon its release reaching the #16 spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1977. While involved in a not so secret relationship with the wife of Beatles George Harrison, Clapton said he wrote the song while waiting for her to get ready to attend a Paul and Linda McCartney annual Buddy Holly party in 1976. In 1970, Clapton released "Layla" that basically proclaimed his love for Harrison's wife. The song has been used in TV and movie media. In 1988, Clapton appeared as a guest guitarist at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert while the band Dire Straits performed as backing musicians for a surprise performance of "Wonderful Tonight". Also, It's not a surprise that this love ballad has become a staple at many high school proms.
