"For the Love of Money" is a soul/funk song recorded by Philadelphia soul vocal group The O'Jays. Released as a single in 1973, it peaked at #3 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, and #9 on Billboard's Pop Singles chart in spring 1974. This album version of the song is over seven minutes long. The lyrics reflect the unadorned warnings about the sordid side of the mighty dollar, and pointing out the things people will do for it. Added effects to the background vocals and the guitar baseline provided a unique sound that made the song stand out on the airwaves. Formed in Canton, Ohio in 1958 while attending high school, the O'Jays emerged to the forefront of Philadelphia soul scoring numerous hits through the 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's.
